Why Can’t You Just Be Nice
My work mixes words and phrases with reappropriated vintage paint-by-numbers to create pieces with, hopefully, multiple layers of meaning. The picture plane, interrupted by the lettering, reveals the underlying architecture and the tension between the two. The genre serves as both a visual vocabulary and access point for the viewer to enter the work. I subscribe to the idea that art exists within the viewer and not in the object itself.
