Josephine
There’s so much mystery to this breathtaking image, which was taken sometime between 1880 and 1899. Though we know the gaff sloop’s name was Josephine, much of the vessel’s history, and the identity of its lone inhabitant, are now long gone. Sailors are ever mindful that the deep blue sea holds so many secrets, so perhaps it is befitting that much remains unknown in Josephine. After all, what truly matters: man’s insignificance in relation to the vast ocean, the power and beauty of being out in the sea, those are things no sailor will ever forget.
