The images presented here are a part of the series Threefold Sun. In this series of images, I explore the influence of Rudolf Steiner’s philosophical movement, Anthroposophy (from “anthropo” for human and “sophy” meaning wisdom), throughout contemporary American culture. I am compelled by the utopian ideas that propel Steiner’s work and find beauty and comfort in the attempts made by his followers to heal the body, the earth, the mind and the spirit through intentional living in all areas of existence. Amidst the bleak landscape of consumerism and self-indulgent world views that define the United States’ broader identity at this moment in history, Steiner’s idealistic teachings offer the suggestion of hope for a different, better world: a world in which human beings, and therefore society, are truly free. Throughout much of Steiner’s teaching, he suggested that the power of imagination possesses truly transformative qualities. Drawing from this concept of the imagined, the images in Threefold Sun offer glimpses of these beautiful, yet sometimes flawed, attempts at creating a freer world for all.
